The Retired Boston Police Patrolmen’s Division of the BPPA, a subdivision of the BPPA, is holding its monthly meeting at 1:00pm on January 8, 2009 (the 2nd Thursday in January) at the offices of the BPPA. We invite any and all retired police officers who retired as Patrolmen/Patrolwomen, and as members in good standing of the BPPA at his or her time of retirement, to rejoin the BPPA as a full member in The Retired Boston Police Patrolmen’s Division of the BPPA.

Aside from the opportunity to see old friends with whom you worked with for many years, you will have the opportunity to access the knowledge of the Union in regards to your retirement and health benefits. In time, as we grow as a unit, we hope to have the opportunity to voice our concerns to the proper venues about any retirement and healthcare issues with the backing of the BPPA.

Think about this. You will not be an honorary member of the BPPA, but a full member of the BPPA through this Division.

Any one interested in acquiring more information may call the Union at 617-989-2772 and ask for an application or request more information about this new organization. You may also click on the link below to download and print an application. Please complete and mail with payment to the Union office. Boston Police Details
BPPA Facts vs. Headlines

BPPA Members,

The Boston Globe has reported "Unions Lose" on September 22, 2008, with regard to the regulations and guidelines to decide how and when police details or flaggers might be used on roads for a state controlled public works project.

Contrary to what the Globe has reported police details in Boston remain controlled by BPPA contract language and the City of Boston’s ordinances and enjoys the full support of Mayor Menino. For the most part, Police details in Boston remain totally the same. What is factual in the Globe's story is the Patrick administration has eliminated a provision that would have accepted contract language on these state controlled public works projects.

What Mass Highway has revised and eliminated was a provision in their regulations that stated if a collective bargaining agreement was in place before the regulation was finalized, the contract would override the regulation language (for police details on state-controlled public works projects). That CBA language has now been stricken out of the regulation. Since the City of Boston has little to no state controlled public works projects, this change has little effect on BPPA members. Still this change by Patrick administration is a disgraceful and unacceptable attack on collective bargaining.

Boston's police details such as NStar, National Grid, Boston Water and Sewer, Susi Construction, Bond Bros., William Berry and Walsh Bros, remain the same. These jobs are now and will continue to be even after this regulation is finalized, controlled by Boston's authority thru local ordinance and the BPPA's CBA. The City of Boston is the awarding authority and regulator for almost all its' own roads as to repairs and paving. The exceptions are state controlled roads such as; Storrow Drive, Morrissey Blvd., Morton Street and VFW Pkwy.

According to the law that authorizes these regulations and the regulations themselves, Boston Police details, (which are under authority and regulation by the City of Boston’s ordinance and BPPA's collective bargaining agreement) will not be affected by these changes. Even with these regulations on state controlled public works projects, there is little to no impact on BPPA member detail work.

Fraternally,

The BPPA Leadership
