H H H H H H H H H Police Dispatcher Nicole Janey, Operations Division TheYouthViolence Strike Force radioed that they had shots fired at Humboldt Avenue and Ruthven Street and that an officer had been hit. A motor vehicle stop had been initiated by theYVSF. As Officer John Moyni- han approached the driver, he opened the door and fired a shot from a .357 magnum firearm at close range, striking Officer Moynihan in the face. Throughout the duration of the evening, Dispatcher Janey maintained a calm and reassuring demeanor and performed her duties with an extraordinary level of skill. She coordinated the ensuing response of command staff, EDT’s, specialized units and the minimum staffing units to this critical scene, as well as to other calls for service withinArea B. Critically important was her ability to coordinate street closings along various routes for the arrival of the ambulance to the scene, as well as its departure trans- porting Officer Moynihan to the hospital. Those were important minutes saved, which aided in immediate medical attention being rendered to the Officer. H H H H H H H H H Police Officers Colleen Fancelli and Sherry Del- lascio, District C-6 Officers Fancelli and Dellascio received information that an individual had climbed through the window of a Bowen Street address. While in the area they stopped a person fitting the suspect’s description. The suspect gave evasive and implausible answers to their inquiries. Through further investigation it was found that the suspect was not authorized to be within 25 yards of this address and had multiple warrants for Assault and Bat- tery andViolations of a Restraining Order. They further investigated the location and found a ripped screen with large footprints leading away. They were able to contact the victim, who was not at home at the time of this incident to obtain further information. The suspect was arrested for Breaking and Entering andViolating the Restraining Order, along with the active warrants for his arrest. H H H H H H H H H Police Officers Fabian Belgrave and Charles Vest, E-5 Officers Belgrave andVest observed a vehicle that caught their attention, facing the wrong way on the street. The vehicle registration revealed a stolen plate. Officers requested registration and identification from both individuals and observed several bags on the floor of the front passenger side of the vehicle. They then re- turned to the cruiser to check the information provided by the suspects and noticed the suspects were now shift- ing around inside of the vehicle and reaching forward and down toward the floorboard. Officers found that one occupant had two prior convictions for unlawfully carrying firearms and that his license to operate a motor vehicle was suspended. They apprehended two crimi- nals and removed a firearm from the streets. H H H H H H H H H Police Officers Arthur Lonergan and David Macioce, D-14 Officers Lonergan and Macioce responded to a call on CommonwealthAvenue. A woman reported that her boyfriend had barricaded himself in the apartment, due to an eviction issue and that he was emotionally disturbed. The door had to be forceably removed and officers had to navigate a number of obstacles of a refrigerator and overturned furniture to reach the back bedroom. When they reached the victim, he concealed his hands from the officers which caused concern about a possible concealed weapon. At that time the victim attempted to exit the apartment by jumping toward a 3 rd floor window. A struggle ensued. During this period the officers and detectives of D-4 were concerned that this individual was becoming increasingly more dangerous putting the public at risk due to his menacing behavior. Officers attempted to calm suspect using reason and non-confrontational techniques. The suspect threatened Officers with a 13 inch long kitchen knife. The non-lethal “bean-bag” was deployed as a last resort. This effectively subdued and stopped the aggression of the suspect who was placed in custody. H H H H H H H H H Police Officers Jennifer Grogan and Patrick McCarthy, C-6 Officers McCarthy and Grogan responded to a radio call for a domestic violence incident in progress. The officers were met by a male victim who was standing by his vehicle. His car keys were taken by the suspect. The suspect armed herself with a large kitchen knife and threatened to kill the victim and herself. The sus- pect ignored the officer’s commands to drop the knife as she threatened the officers waving the knife at them from approximately 10 feet away as they attempted to communicate with her, with firearms drawn. Eventually, the officers were able to convince the suspect to drop the knife and kick it towards them. They then took her into custody without further incident. – William B.
