Both suspects were to be arraigned in Roxbury District Court. ID, Crime Lab, and the Ballistic Unit all responded to the scene. Boston Police Chaplain Father Lane also responded to Boston City Hospital where Patrolman Maceria was undergoing surgery and placed onto the danger list. Patrolman Maceria’s mother Bienvanida Maceria was notified by telephone as she lived in the Bronx, NewYork. Patrolman Maceira sustained severe injuries from the shooting; the bullet had entered his right cheek and ricocheted off his teeth downward, damaging his vocal chords where it lodged in his back left side, behind his heart – the bullet was not removed. Patrolman Maceira had a tube surgically inserted into his throat, he was not able to swallow since he was shot. His weight fell from 240 lbs. to 148 lbs. Patrolman Maceira was placed onto MIS status on January 29, 1975. On May 1, 1977, two and a half years after being shot in the line of duty, Patrolman JoseA. Maceira died when a piece of food got lodged in his injured throat. Patrolman Maceira is the first Hispanic Boston Police Officer to be killed in the line of duty and becomes the 79 th Boston Police Officer to give his life in the performance of his duties as a Boston Police Officer. Patrolman JoséA. Maceira, Badge # 2453 is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, his grave will be marked with a memorial wreath during the BPRAMemorial Day Mass and Service on June 5, 2016.
