Pishkin/New York Life T he people of Boston should be very careful of what they wish for. Any cop with an ounce of instinct for self-preservation who has to wear a body camera will throw discretion right out the window. No more warnings instead of traffic citations, no more calling for a cab and tow truck for borderline drunk drivers, no pouring out beer and calling teenager’s parents. Everyone will be arrested, cited, or summonsed for every violation of the law, no matter how minor or trivial. With body cameras, if an officer cuts someone a break on a traffic offense, he/she will be second guessed as to why; was the person another cop?A politician? Related to or knows someone important? Discretion and good will goes right out the window; EVERYONE is treated the same, no matter the circumstances. Sorry if you’re coming from the funeral reception of your spouse after a few drinks, hit a curb, and blow out your own tire. With body cameras, no sane officer will risk the second-guessing and wild accusations from the public and the media, so you’re getting arrested. You want the police to be backed into a corner, where they can’t use discretion, compassion, or common sense? No problem, just don’t complain about the resulting tidal wave of arrests, citations, and criminal and civil summonses. As stated, be very careful of what you wish for.
