The fact that people like Gerald Sweet are able to weigh in on decisions that a police officer has to make in a split- second is, in and of itself, disturbing. The officers and EMT’s involved in this particular situation had to decide what to do in the presence of an angry, knife-wielding man in far less time than it takes to type one sentence in this article. Same question, Gerald: One lump or two? Honey or lemon?... It is the pipe-dream of every cop and EMT to take people like Gerald, Vera, June and Sylvia, dress them up in uniforms, and set them afloat on the seas which we must travel every day. What world do these people live in? What alternative reality possesses them to pre- suppose the split-second decisions of cops and EMT’s who are under attack? Encouraged by like-minded simpletons in the major media who already harbor an anti-police agenda, one would truly like to force these people to walk a mile in our shoes and see just how long they would last. The crisis in the Massachusetts Mental Health system goes way back to the high-minded days of the 70’s and 80’s, when clueless A reduced legal fee is continuously offered to police officers and has been for more than thirty (30) years. Our office has successfully represented countless law enforcement officers in their personal injury claims (on or off duty) and other legal matters. The first Law Offices of Donald E. Green was opened in Boston’s waterfront in 1982 and the second office in Dudley Square/Roxbury in 1988. In 1968, he joined the Boston Police Department and retired in 1990 after serving the city for nearly 22 years, the last 15 years as a Sergeant in the Roxbury district. He is married to Annette Hill Green, a native of Dorchester, who is also an attorney and his law partner. “We are proud of our investment in the community and the trust our clients have instilled in us to handle and resolve their legal matters over the past 30 years. Evening andWeekend Appointments Available • Home and Hospital Appointments Available D on G reen A nnette H ill G reen D on G reen liberals like Brookline’s own former Gov. Mike Dukakis proposed a policy of “de-institutionalization” of the mentally ill, who had previously been warehoused in decrepit mental hospitals. These mentally-ill people were dumped in the community and on the city streets, without services suitable for their needs, and WE – the police and the EMT’s – were left to deal with them. Today, we receive advice and criticism from Monday-morning, armchair quarterbacks living in Newton, Littleton or claiming title to some politically-appointed hack-job at some alleged non-profit charity or social service organization. When the severely, violently mentally- ill find their way to the streets of Mike Dukakis’, Gerald’s, Vera’s, Sylvia’s and June’s neighborhoods, you can bet they’ll be calling 911 to have them removed – immediately . And you can bet dollars to doughnuts they’ll be filming us with their cellphone camera from the safety of their living-room window, ready to render their opinion. The police, unfortunately, are left to clean up the mess, deal with the results, and suffer the criticism of armchair liberals rendering their opinions to the local media.
