PAX Centurion - Fall 2017

Page 48 • PAX CENTURION • Fall 2017 617-989-BPPA (2772) I always say there are not enough hours in the day to stop and catch your breath and just relax. By virtue of what we do the hours are long while the time off is short. Sometimes I find peace just walking behind a building to view the Boston Harbor. For most of us this is our lot in life; long hours with little rest. Planning a vacation can be as stressful as work. Actually going on vacation can be just as tiring all depending what your doing. You may actually need a vacation from your vacation! For some of us the solace and tranquility of our own backyards can be bring us peace. For me going to the theater or a concert brings me this state of grace I look for short term. It’s as good as it will get given my surroundings and choices. Fishing would be nice but that would require a boat with more planning, or a fishing license to fish off the dock. Just a short term escape from the everyday chaos that consumes the bulk of our time. Give me a good singer or group from past or present that will just sing and play and not talk politics, that would be fine for me. Needless to say Hamilton or Shakespeare in the park is not on my list to see for obvious reasons. A short weekend trip to NewYork City with the family to enjoy Motown the play was very enjoyable. For those of us that grew up with the music you know what I am talking about. When most radios stations were on theAM dial, and you could hear the sweet sounds of the Temptations singing “My Girl’ crackling out of a transistor radio. The music and lyrics were innocent. The songs spoke of love or lost love. Marvin Gaye sang of the sad state of the world in “What’s Going On”. Quick hits with family can be rewarding By Mark A. Bruno No talk of beating your woman up or strapping on a nine-iron to show your manliness. Just clean soulful music to enjoy on a sunny afternoon. My kids got to experience the sounds and history of Motown. From Smokey, the Temptations, the Four Tops, to the Jackson Five, the Supremes and everyone in between. This play had it all with one hit after another. My youngest son,Robert, could not believe this one tiny label turned out so many hits. The writing team of Holland-Dozier-Holland along with Smokey Robinson turned out more hit songs than you could imagine. We all walked out of that theater cheerfully impressed. Fast forward fifty plus years from those early days of Motown and still going strong is Diana Ross. I had the pleasure of taking my sisters and youngest son to see her. She didn’t disappoint at seventy-three years old. From beginning to end everyone was on their feet dancing. From the early days of the Supremes right up to her solo years, she belted out the tunes one after another. Towards the end she sang “Theme from Mahogany” and went right intoAin’t no Mountain High”. The crowd erupted! This is a legend of days gone by the likes of which we may never see again in our lifetime. From all her costume changes with feather boas and wraps, she looked absolutely beautiful. She put the “D” in Diva! The fabulous Ms. Diana Ross! It was an enjoyable night spent with family who all had a good time. My son, Robert, was really impressed. In the end I got to enjoy one of the things I like, music, with the people I love most, my family. If you can’t get away on vacation try a quick hit and enjoy your family and whatever life has to offer for your pleasure.
